With all the recent bad news coming out of Beacon Hill (arrests of state senator Dianne Wilkerson, Boston city councilor Chuck Turner), the outrage over toll hikes to pay for the Big Dig debacle, and Governor Patrick’s idiot remarks about voter cynacism, there is a crisis in leadership here in Massachusetts.
It was a breath of fresh air to hear from recently elected Metropolitan of the Orthodox Church in America, Jonah Paffhausen. Apparently the OCA has gone through it’s own crisis in leadership. A few months ago, Metropolitan Jonah was an abbot of an Orthodox monastery and now leads the entire North American church. The night before he was elected, Jonah gave a speech. The quote which roused the audience to its feet:
Authority is responsibility. Authority is accountability. It is not power.
That’s a lesson Massachusetts politicians should learn. No…wait…it’s a lesson understood by Massachusetts citizens, especially those who plan to run against the incumbants.
