Feel Good…Slap a Hippie

As you know, Hubby and I spent 3 days in the Berkshires; it’s one of the prettiest spots in Ma. While out there we got into a conversation about the region. Northern Berskshire (Adams, Florida, Savoy) has a blue collar, gritty feel. We actually like that since it seems more based in reality. Southern Berkshires (Great Barrington, Stockbridge, Egremont) is the total opposite. Aging hippies have done very well for themselves out there. All the peace symbols made out of twine hanging on the walls of $700,000 $900,000 homes along with the small, blue OBAMA lawn signs made one feel like in a fairy-land.

Don’t get me wrong, the fact that I could order pizza with vegan cheese was a wonderful treat but I felt conspicuous in my non-organic clothing. We got bonus points for riding in a ‘07 Toyota Matrix, that’s just one step below a Prius, doncha’ know. I totally forgot that our governor, Deval “The Cadillac of Governors” Patrick, lives out in Richmond, smack dab next to West Stockbridge. Hubby and I drove around W.S. to get a feel for the place (it’s the “new Hamptons“); it was once a farmers town that boasts a bistro or three.

So another place that’s been priced out for the working middle class; that makes (most of) Maine, Vermont and western Massachusetts. Thank you, Aging Hippies!

Ask these aging hippies if they’d like to put up some low-income housing in downtown Stockbridge to make up for the outpriced real estate and see what kind of reaction you get!
